Alignment Training Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is centerline steering?
The steering wheel is level when travelling a straight course
What is tire life?
The ability of the vehicle’s suspension and steering system to provide proper road contact and maximize tire life
What is directional stability?
The ability of a vehicle to maintain a straight course on a level surface without input from the steering wheel
What is returnability?
The ability of the front wheels to return to the straight ahead position from a steered position with little to no input from the steering wheel
What is road isolation?
The ability of the suspension and steering system to diminish road forces and provide comfort for the occupants
What is feedback?
The “feel of the road” required to allow the operator to judge road conditions and maintain control of the vehicle
What is cornering?
The ability of a vehicle to maintain control in a curved path
What is predictability?
A safe and expected response by the vehicle to road surface conditions and driver input
What are the three steps to a road test?
- Evaluate the vehicle’s operation
- Confirm the customer’s concerns
- Create a base line for the post alignment test drive
What are the four road test course guidelines?
- Straight and level road
- Area to stop and start
- Left and right turn
- Dip or bump
What are the five steering system components?
- Steering wheel, column, shaft, and bearings
- Steering coupler
- Steering gear assembly with spool/control valve
- Inner and outer tie rods, adjustment sleeves and jam nuts
- Protective rubber boots
What are the four linkage components of a rack and pinion steering system?
- Inner tie rods
- Jam nuts or pinch bolts
- Outer tie rod ends
- Bellows boots
What are the two kinds of steering component inspection?
- Dry park
- Weight off
What is the dry park method?
Linkage inspected without raising front wheels
What is the weight off method?
Linkage inspected with the front wheels raised
What are the eight front suspension components?
- Pivot points
- Ball joints
- Upper strut bearings
- Strut rod bushings
- Wheel bearing
- Shocks & struts
- Springs
- Sway bar bushings
