Suspension and Steering Linkage Systems Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the six functions a suspension system must perform?
- Provide a connection from the frame to the wheels
- Allow the wheels to move vertically over bumps
- Allow the wheels to pivot for steering
- Keep the wheels in relative alignment with the frame
- Support the vehicles mass
- Absorb and isolate road shock from the passengers
What must suspension prevent?
Lateral (side to side), forward, or rearward movement of the wheels
What classifies as sprung weight?
Any mass or vehicle component supported by the springs
What classifies as un-sprung weight?
Any mass or vehicle component not supported by the springs
What do suspension bushings do?
Support suspension components through their pivotal range, while providing noise and vibration isolation
What do torsilastic bushings do?
- Provide maximum support while minimizing vibration and noise
- Allow adequate movement of suspension through twisting (shearing) action of rubber
What four things should suspension bushings be inspected for?
- Severe weathering
- Distortion
- Polished areas
- Seized components
What two tools can you use to remove a suspension bushing?
- Screw type press
- Hydraulic press
When should bushing fasteners be tightened?
While the vehicle sits at ride height
