Alkenes Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are stereoisomers ?
They have the same structural formula but have a different arrangement of atoms in space
What is E-Z stereoisomerism ?
Occurs in alkenes.
Occurs when:
1. There is restricted rotation around the carbon carbon double bond
2. There are two different groups attached to both ends of the double bond
Also called geometric isomers
Z isomers
Cis
Same side
E isomers
Opposite sides
Trans
What is the priority group in E-Z isomerism ?
The atom with the bigger atomic number
What is a saturated fatty acids ?
It contains carbon single bonds
It is a straight chain
What is an unsaturated fatty acid ?
It contains carbon double bonds.
This causes kinks in the chain.
Nucleophiles
Electron pair donor
Electrophile
Electron pair acceptor
What mechanism does alkenes undergo ?
Electrophillic addition
Why is a tertiary carbocation more stable than a primary ?
It will last longer in solution
What is Markovnikov’s rule ?
The major product is formed when the halogen is added to the carbon with the FEWEST HYDROGENS attatched to it
What are Alkynes ?
They have a triple bond
They behave in the same way as alkenes but are MORE REACTIVE
What is syn-addition ?
Atoms added to the same face
What is anti-addition ?
Atoms added to opposite faces
