Spectroscopy Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is Beer’s law ?
A = e x c x l
A= absorbance
e= molar absorpitivity
c= concentration
l= path length
What is electromagnetic spectrum ?
In order of increasing frequency
1. Radio waves
2. Microwaves
3. Infrared
4. UV
5. Gamma
What is diffraction ?
The bending or spreading of waves when they encounter an obstacle
What is refraction ?
The bending of a wave when it passes from one medium to another with a different optical density
What is polarisation ?
The process by which vibrations of a transverse wave are restricted to one direction or plane
What is interference ?
When two or more waves overlap to form a new wave
What is constructive?
When crests and troughs of waves align in phase.
Their amplitudes add together
What is destructive ?
The crest of one wave coincides with the trough of another wave.
Their amplitudes cancel each other out.
What is energy of radiation ?
The amount of energy carried by electromagnetic waves
E = h x f
h= planks constant
f= frequency
What is translation ?
The movement of an object in a way such that all its points move in the same direction by the same distance
What is rotation ?
The movement of an object around a fixed point or axis
What is oscillation ?
The repetitive back and forth movement of an object around a central point
Describe the order of energy needed for excitation
Translation < rotation < vibration < electronic excitation
What is electronic excitation ?
The process by which an electron in an atom absorbs energy and jumps from lower energy level to higher energy level
