what was the case study Lorenz did and found?
peacock reared in reptile house where first ring seen was giant tortoise directed courtship at a later date to tortoises.
peacock underwent sexual imprinting
what did Lorenz research?
imprinting and sexual imprinting
what was Lorenz’s procedure?
experiment
randomly divided clutch of goose eggs, 1/2 hatch with mother, 1/2 in incubator where the first thing they see was Lorenz
What was Lorenz’s findings
incubator group followed Lorenz everywhere, control followed mother.
when the two groups mixed control followed mum but experiment followed Lorenz.
He found a critical period where if imprinting didn’t happen chicks wouldn’t attach to a mother figure.
what is sexual imprinting? what did Lorenz do to study it
observed birds that imprinted on humans would display courtship to human later.
what did Harlow do and find researching importance of contact comfort?
rhesus monkey babies left alone in bare cage died but if given something soft survived.
he tested this in an experiment where he reared 16 monkeys with 2 wired mums. one metal wiring gave milk, second it was covers by a soft cloth and gave milk.
baby cuddles to cloth covered mum in preference to plain wire and sought comfort when frightened regardless of who gave milk.
contact comfort more important then food
what did Harlow find about maternally deprived monkeys when they became adults?
had a permanent effect
severe consequences
plain wire monkeys= most disfunctional
cloth over the wire= not devel normal social behaviour
more aggressive and less sociable and bred less- unskilled at mating, and kill or neglect child
what’s the critical period for normal development?
mother had to be introduced within 90 days to form attachment otherwise it was impossible and damage was done
