Explanation: Learning Theory Flashcards
(10 cards)
who came up with ‘cupboard love?’ what is it?
Dollard and Miller. when attachment/love is due to feeding or food
what is classical conditioning?
learning to associate two stimuli so they create the same response
how does classical conditioning work in attachment?
a baby learns to associate the person feeding (the neutral stimulus) with the same feelings of pleasure (unconditioned response) they get from the milk they drink(unconditioned stimulus) meaning they feel pleasure(conditioned response) at the person who feeds them(a conditioned stimulus)
what’s the classical conditioning equation ?
unconditioned stimulus = unconditioned response
unconditioned stimulus + neutral stimulus = unconditioned response
conditioned stimulus = conditioned response
what is operant conditioning?
learning due to consequences
what are the three types of consequences?
positive reinforcement
negative reinforcement
punishment
what does positive reinforcement entail? in form of attachment?
it is a reward which results in the behaviour being repeated .
if a baby cries, it is given comfort, this is the reward
what does negative reinforcement entail? in form of attachment?
a way of avoiding unpleasant situations. behaviour gets repeated.
if a baby cries in the middle of the night, a parent goes to comfort, in turn the baby stops crying. this is the reward
what does punishment entail? in form of attachment.
when they are in trouble, the behaviour is then less likely to be repeated.
if a baby is told off or left to cry, this is the punishment. the baby will understand it’s in trouble and possibly will stop.
what is meant by attachment is a secondary drive? who’s idea?
SEARS
hunger is a primary drive, its innate, and we are motivated to reduce the hunger drive. A caregiver provides us with the reduced hunger drive, feeding, so the primary drive gets generalised to them.
this means the attachment is secondary learnt through the association of food and caregiver.
