what is the procedure?
it’s a controlled observation designed to measure security of attachments a baby displays towards caregiver.
in controlled conditions in a room with a two way mirror or camera to observe
what behaviours were used to judge attachment? what do they mean?
proximity seeking- stay close to caregiver
exploration and secure base behaviour- explores but uses caregiver as a base
stranger anxiety
separation anxiety
response to reunion
what were the seven ‘episodes’ of 3 minutes?
- baby encouraged to explore
- stranger enter, talk to caregiver and approach baby
- caregiver leaves
- caregiver return and stranger leaves
- baby left alone
- stranger return
- caregiver return and is reunited with bby
What was found
there were patterns in way bby bhved- identify 3 main types:
secure
insecure avoidant
insecure resistant
what do the three types mean?
secure: explore happily but go back to caregiver, show moderate separation anxiety, moderate stranger anxiety. require and accept comfort from caregiver in reunion. 60-75% British babies
insecure avoidant: explore freely but don’t seek proximity or secure base behaviour. little/no reaction when caregiver leaves and little stranger anxiety. make little effort to make contact on reunion and may avoid contact. 20-25% British baby
insecure resistant: seek great proximity and explore less. high lvl stranger and separation distress but resist comfort when reunited . 3% British babies
