Approached to Personality 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
According to Hippocrates physical illness arises due to?
An imbalance of bodily fluids
What were Galen’s 4 personality ‘temperaments’?
- Phlegmatic
- Choleric
- Sanguine
- Melancholic
Phlegmatic Temperament
Clam and relaxed
Choleric Temperament
Angry and volatile
Sanguine Temperament
Happy and enthusiastic
Melancholic Temperament
Depressed and unhappy
2 original dimensions of personality (Eysenck, 1947)
- Extraversion
- Neuroticism
Orthogonal
Both traits are independent
3rd dimension of personality, Eysenck (1970s)
Psychoticism
Why was psychoticism not considered wholly independent?
An important dimension of personality but not totally independent of Neuroticism.
According to the biological account of extraversion what is the role of The Ascending Reticular Activation System (ARAS)?
Located in the brain stem, modulates activity in the brain stem
Activity of the ARAS in extroverts?
- Lower levels of cortical arousal, so seek out external stimulation
Activity of the ARAS in introverts?
- higher levels of cortical arousal, so avoid external stimulation
Key biological underpinning of neuroticism?
The reticula-limbic system (RLS), involved in emotional processing
RLS in those with high levels of neuroticism?
Higher baseline activity, making them more sensitive to emotionally provoking stimuli.
Key brain areas involved in the Rienforcement Sensitivity Theory
- Amygdala
- Ventromedial hypothalamus
- Midbrain grey matter
Behavioural Activation System (BAS)
Behaviour towards desired goals based on previous experience. Activated behaviour previously associated with positive events.
Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS)
Attention on negative consequences of behaviour. It inhibits behaviour to avoid negative events.
According to Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory, anxiety is driven by?
BIS system
According to Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory, impulsivity is driven by?
BAS system
Dispositional approach to personality
Personality is seen as consistent internal dispositions, independent of context.
Situational approach to personality
Personality is seen as a series of correlated states, resulting from situational factors, dependent on context.
Nomothetic approach to personality
Individual differences in personality can be described using the same terms. We all exist on a continuum.
Ideographic approach to personality
Individual differences in personality cannot be described using the same terms, two people are unique.
