Mood Flashcards
(12 cards)
How did Beedie et al., (2005) test the conceptual separation of mood and emotion?
A content analysis of definitions of common mood-emotion separations from the academic literature and lay people
What are are the two orthogonal dimensions of mood according to Watson and Tellegen (1985)
- Positive Affect (PA)
- Negative Affect (PA)
How does research from Larson et al. (2000) challenge the orthogonal nature of Watsons and Tellegen’s two dimensions of mood?
Participants were able to experience conflicting emotions ‘bittersweetness’ when watching a tragic comedy
Mathew et al. (1990) 3 dimensions model of mood
- Tense arousal
- Energetic arousal
- Hedonic tone
3 main biases to the retrospective judgement of mood
- Peak end effects
- Effects of current mood
- Cultural mood stereotypes
What two questions were Areni and Burger (2008) trying to investigate?
- Do mood stereotypes reflect actual mood?
- Do mood stereotypes reflect actual mood?
Conclusions from Areni and Burger (2008)
- Actual mood varies less than expected mood.
- Mood stereotypes are better predictors of remembered mood, rather than actual mood.
How did Schwartz & Claw (1983) test the effects of current mood?
Telephone interviews when rainy and sunny, asking participants to rate overall and current mood.
Peak End Theory
Peoples retrospective experiences of pain were biased by the peak and end of the experience.
Study design of Chajut et al. (2014)
- Pregnant woman during labour
- Asked to rate pain every 20 minutes and retrospectively (2 years and 2 months)
Chajut et al. (2014) findings?
- retrospective pain was much higher than average pain throughout experience.
- Peak and end pains were better predictors of remembered pain
How could contemporaneous mood assessment be criticised?
- Does not give us an insight into the memory of experience which is important as it:
- Influences future behaviour
- Informed our sense of wellbeing
