  • panthers either side of Medusa face out = Archaic feature
  • figures are crouched or laying down as move towards the corners to fill the space

Metopes of Temple C, Selinus

570-550 BC

A

Herakles In the middle with a kerope on either shoulder hanging upside down tied to a pole for being mischevious. Unrelated to 12 labours. Shows midpoint of story

  • Herakles stands facing forwards twisted to the side - confidence stance - strong confident character
  • bug eyes
  • Herakles = the bigger figure and in the centre to place all the focus on him
  • proportions = inaccurate
    • keropes have beaded hair
    • binds added to keropes feet for interest + narrative

Giants had Hubris (prode) wanted power and life that gods had

LEFT: gods attacking w/ spears, swords, arrows

RIGHT: giants w/ helmets, breastplates, shields and greaves

  • 2 different sides of the sheild is used - shows different depths “deep space” HARRIS
  • popular symbol for victory of civilised over barbarians
    • “re-establishing power of gods + fool hardiness of trying to upset natural order” ZUCKER

A

STORY: wedding of Thetis and Peleus - Eris (G.O.DISCORD) was not invited - golden apple is given to zeus to decide the fairest goddess

  • Aphrodite stepping off her chariot
  • few surviving relief figures
  • functions w/ decoration of East side showing Trokan war
    • considered the linking of two stories / 2 friezes = sculptor has considered overall effect of sculptural decoration
