- Chief Tutor, Adrian of Utrecht, instilled devotion to Church and emphasised family dream of reclaiming Burgundy.
- Utrecht later became Regent in Spain.
- Chiévres De Croÿ, Burgundian Nobleman, taught Charles State Affairs.

1517: Arrival In Spain
A
- Was unable to go to Spain until 1517 incase France invaded Netherlands.
- Charles considered ‘foreigner’, Hadn’t been to Spain before and couldn’t speak language, wasn’t accepted.
Appointed Burgundians in Spanish Offices:
Cröy became chief advisor.
Most anger at Archbishopric of Castile being given to Cröy’s nephew, Jacques De Croÿ.

Acceptance From Cortes

Cortes of Castile:
- Anger at Charles choosing Burgundian President (Jean Le Sauvage).
- Charles promised to respect traditions.
- Granted Service of 600,000 Ducats.
Cortes of Aragon: 3 separate Cortes, Aragon- Reluctant to accept him as king, eventually did in 1519, granted 200,000 Ducats. Catalonia- Took yr to accept him, 250,000 Ducats granted. Valencia- Delay in Catalonian Cortes meant couldn't visit, found out he was elected HRE and had to leave Spain.

Cortes of Santiago 1520
A
Charles needed to pay for becoming HRE, held court in Santiago because it was convenient for him to get to.
- Annoyed Nobles, very remote and far away place.
- Showed Charles’ lack of knowledge of Spain.
- Charles had asked for money 3yrs ago, asking for too much.
- Eventually money was granted
- Charles broke promise not to appoint foreigners: Adrian of Utrecht made regent while Charles left for HRE.
