Arteries Flashcards

Q

Elastic arteries

Muscular arteries

Arterioles

A
  • E.g. aorta, common carotid.
  • Conducting arteries – withstand pressure change due to elastic fibres to maintain blood flow
  • Thick tunica media, elastic fibres, less smooth muscle tissue.
  • ^2.5 diameter.
  • e.g. brachial, femoral and named arteries.
  • Distributing arteries – blood to muscles/organs. Vasodilate/constrict.
  • No elastic fibres, smooth muscle tissue in tunica media, distinct elastic layers (external and
    internal) , thick tunica externa.
  • 0.5mm – 0.4cm.
  • Resistance vessels – vasoconstriction/dilation.
  • 1-2 layers of smooth muscle cells in tunica media, poorly defined tunica externa.
