The Judicial, Executive and Legislative Branch
Thematic Importance: Reflection of the goal of the Founding Father’s to institute a system of check’s and balances, in order to limit government power, while still maintaining necessary efficacy lacking in the Articles of Confederation
Identify the major tenets of Washington’s Farewell Adress
- Cautions against entering into foreign alliances
- Extolls the benefits of federal government
- Stresses the importantance of religion and morality
- Instructs to “cherish and preserve” the public credit
- Warns against the party system
- Cautions against an overly powerful military establishment
Identiffy the Jay Treaty and explain it’s thematic importance
A treaty under the presidency of George Washington in 1974 that averted war due to unresovled issues form the Treaty of Paris, stimulated 10 years of peaceful trade between the two countries
Thematic Importance: Aligned US interests with Britain’s interest vs. French, a controversial move at the time, but set up the US trade relations
From a population standpoint, what was the major shift in the character of the United States during the 1920’s.
The United States shifted form an urban to rural nation
Thematic Importance: Set up the United States to progress on both the industrial path that would define the economic character of the nation for many years, as well as would play a central role in defining the social issues of the day.
Identify the overriding theme behind the Rural and Urban divde in the 1920’s. Then give at least three examples that illustrate this theme
Many American’s who did not live in American cities believed that the new and spreading values associated with urban life needed to be oppposed: due to their conern/beief their rural way of life was being assualted and threatened.

Identify Watergate
A White House political scandal that came to light during the 1972 presidential campaign, growing out of a break-in at the Democratic party headquarters at the Watergate apartment-office complex in Washington, D.C., and, after Congressional hearings, culminating in the resignation of President Nixon in 1974.
Thematic Importance: Displayed for the first time that the laws of the nation are superior to the acttions of the president. In addition showed the president’s powers are limited
