Managment of babies with asthma and how to give inhaler

A
  • Baby needs spacer + mask (eg volumatic)
  • For baby, need to tilt mask down to open valve and allows medication to be inhaled
  • Seal around babys mouth and nose
  • Before giving inhaler - shake it (takes 10-15s for propellant and meds to mix)
  • Wait for 5-8 breathes per puff, around 10 seconds (do one puff at a time)
  • Shake again before second puff

  • Change every 6 months
  • Clean regularly

How to clean spacer?

A
  • Soapy water
  • Rinse out
  • Let it air dry on kitchen roll - don’t want to increase static charge on inside spacer - medication that goes in then sticks onto inside of spacer rather than inhaled

  • Always use spacer with inhaled steriod - reduces side effects of oral thrush/hoarse voice
  • In 5+ can consider turbohaler (powder device)

  • Get child to stand up
  • Put counter to zero
  • Inhale deeply away from device
  • Puff as hard and as fast as they can into peak flow
  • Record highest of 3 blows
