Atoms and Chemical Bonds Flashcards
(8 cards)
Hydrogen Bonding
Bonding between negative and positive charges of a molecules’ hydrogen and F, O, or N.
Hydrophilic
Polar, soluble molecules.
Hydrophobic
Not attracted to water, usually C-C or C-H bonds
ex) fats
Carbon Bonds
Forms nonpolar with C and H
Forms polar covalent with O and N
Structural Isomers
Different arrangement of C atoms, but same formula
ex) C4H10 can be arranged in two ways
Cis/Trans Isomers
Same molecular formula, but differs structure around C=C bond; these bonds are inflexible
Cis-meaning common branches are on the same side
Trans-meaning common branches are on different sides
Enantiomers
Molecules containing 4 parts, centered around a C atom. Mirror images of one another
ex) a right hand in a mirror
Solubiliity
Small, polar molecules that water can dissolve.
ex)sugar is soluble, starch is too large
