Evidence for role of fathers as primary caregivers
Field- 4 month old infants in face to face interaction. Primary mothers and fathers spent more time imitating, smiling and holding the infants than the secondary fathers.
Mothers naturally more skilled
Schaffer and Emerson - the majority of babies first become attached to their mother at around 7 months and in only 3% of cases the father was the sole object of attachment. However most fathers go on into becoming important attachment figures with 75% of babies forming an attachment with their father by 18 months
Fathers play a different role
Geiger- play interactions with the father are more exciting and pleasurable while mothers were more nurturing and affectionate
Asocial stage
0-8 weeks
Happier in the presence of humans than alone, prefer faces to non faces, behaviour towards humans and non human objects quite similar, do not prefer specific people
Indiscriminate attachment
2-7 months

Accept comfort from any adult
