Autonomic nervous system Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Part of the peripheral nervous system that controls smooth muscle and glands
What is the central control of the autonomic nervous system?
Hypothalamus
What body functions does the autonomic system control?
Not under conscious control
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Finely tunes internal environment
Accelerator and brake
What is a ganglion?
Collection of cell bodies outside of the central nervous system
What would a ganglion be the CNS?
Nuclei
What are the target tissues of the autonomic nervous system?
Smooth muscle and glands
What can the autonomic nervous system be split into?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Where does the sympathetic system segment?
Thoracolumbar outflow
T1-L2
Where does the parasympathetic system segment?
craniosacral outflow
cranial- 4CNs
sacral- S2-S4
Where are the cell bodies in the sympathetic system?
lateral horn of grey matter of spinal cord
Where are the cell bodies in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Grey matter of sacral spinal cord and brainstem
What does the sympathetic system do?
Fight or flight
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Rest and digest
Feed and breed
How are ganglia presented in the sympathetic nervous system?
Cervical portion of the sympathetic chain
Superior cervical gangion
How does the sympathetic innervation travel in the head and neck?
hitch hikes on Blood vessels
and also distally join CN V branches
Which cranial nerves carry parasympathetic fibres from the brain?
Oculomotor
Facial
Glossopharyngeal
Vagus
What are the effector tissues of the sympathetic innervation to the head and neck?
Eye
Eye lid
Blood vessels
sweat glands
What is the response of sympathetic innervation to the head and neck?
Pupillary dilation
Assists lid retraction
vaso-constriction
sweating
What is the origin of the parasympathetic nervous system in the head and neck?
Brainstem
How does the parasympathetic nervous system travel in the head and neck?
Cranial nerves III, VII, IX and X
All post ganglionic fibres react the effector organs via branches of V (EXCEPT X)
What are the ganglia of the parasympathetic system in the head and neck?
Cilary
Pterygopalatine
Submandibular
Otic
What are the effector tissues of the parasympathetic system in the head and neck
Eye
Lacrimal, mucosal, salivary and parotid gland
What is the response of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Constrict pupil
Accommodation reflex, glandular sections and cardiac and smooth muscle in respiratory and digestive system
