Lymphatics Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the lymphatic systems job?
To drain tissue fluid, plasma proteins and other cellular debris back into the blood stream
Also involved in Immune defence
What can the lymphatic of the head a dnwck be divided into?
Deep vessels and superficial vessels
Where do the superficial vessels drain into?
From the scalp face and neck into the superficial ring (at the junction between the head and neck)
Where does the deep lymphatic vessels arise from?
The deep cervical Lymph nodes and converge to form the left and right jugular lymphatic trunks
Where does the left jugular Lymphatic trunk join the neck?
Joins the thoracic duct at the root of the neck
Where does the right jugular lympthatic duct empty?
The right lymphatic duct at the root of the neck
What can the lymph nodes of the head and neck be divided into?
Superficial ring and vertical group
Where do the superficial ring of lymoh nodes receive there lymph?
Scalp
Face
neck
What are the superficial lymph nodes?
Occipital Mastoid Pre-auricular Parotid Submental Submandibular Facial Superficial cervical
How many and where are the occipital lymph nodes?
Back of the head at the lateral border of trapezius muscle and collect lymph from occipital area of the scalp
1-3
How many and where are the mastoid lymph nodes and where do they collect lymph?
Posterior to the ear and lie on the insertion of the sternocleidomastoid into the mastoid process
Collected lymph from posterior neck, upper ear and the back of the external auditory meatus
2
How many and where are the pre-auricular lymph nodes and where do they collect lymph?
Anterior to the auricle of the ear
Collect lymph from superficial areas of the face and temporal region
1-3
How many and where are the parotid lymph nodes and where do they collect lymph
Group of lymph nodes superficial to the parotid gland
Collect lymph from Mose and nasal cavity
How many and where are the submental lymph nodes and where do they collect lymph?
Superficial to the mylohoid muscle
Collect from lower lip, poor of the mouth and apex of the tongue
How many and where are the submandibular lymoh nodes and where do they collect lymph?
3-6
Below the mandible
Collect from cheeks, lateral nose lower lip, upper lips, gums and anterior tongue
Where do the facial lymph nodes collect lymph?
Mucous membranes of the nose, cheek, eyelids and conjunctiva
Where do superficial cervical Lymoh nodes lie?
Anterior- Anterior jugular vein and collect Lymoh from anterior neck
Posterior- external jugular vein and collect lymph from superficial surface of the neck
Where do the deep lymph nodes receive lymph from?
The whole head and neck
Directly or from superficial
What are deep lymphnodes organised into?
Vertical chain
Close to the IJV in the carotid sheath
Form jugular lymphatic trunk
Superior and inferior
What is virchows node?
Supraclavicular mode located in the left supraclavicular fossa
Recieves lymph drainage from the abdominal cavity
Troissiers sign- enlarged and indicates presence of abdomen cancer- gastric cancer
What does waldeyers tonsillar ring contain?
Lingual tonsils- under tongue
Palatine Tonsils- common tonsils
Tubal Tonsils- nasopharynx
Pharyngeal tonsils- adenoid
What is removal of the palatine tonsils called?
Tonsillectomy
What is quinsy?
Infections spreads perionsollar tissue causes absess formation causing deviation of the uvula
Medical emergency and can cause obstruction of the pharynx
Drain absess and antibiotics
