B1 Enzymes Flashcards
(10 cards)
Active Site
Area of an enzyme that “fits” in a particular substrate
Enzyme-Substrate Rate Complex
When a substrate is fitted into the active site of an enzyme and can be acted upon (broken down)
Denature
In the wrong conditions enzymes may break down affecting the shape of the active site
How can increasing temp cause an enzyme to denature?
High temp starts to break the bonds which holds the enzyme together + causes the active sight to change shape
Catalyst
Speeds up chemical reactions and is reusable (not used up in the reaction)
Substrate
A substance that will be affected upon (broken down) by an enzyme
Optimum Conditions
The conditions (temp + pH) at which an enzyme will work best
What is pH?
A measure of acidity
Lock and Key Model
An idea that substrates fit in the active sites of enzymes like key fits in locks
Enzymes
Biological catalysts made from proteins that speed up biological reactions in the body
