B16 - Adaptation, interdependence and competition Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is an ecosystem?
The interaction of a community with the abiotic parts of their environment
What is a species?
Organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring
What is a population?
Organisms of the same species in a habitat
What is a community?
All the populations of organisms in a habitat
What is interdependence?
Within a community each species depends on other species for food shelter ect. If one species is removed it can have a knock on effect
What is a stable community?
One where all the species and environmental factors are in balance
What do plants compete for?
Light, space, water, mineral ions
List some examples of abiotic factors
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Moisture levels
- Soil pH
- Wind
- CO2
- O2 levels for aquatic animals
What do animals compete for?
Food, territory, mates
List some biotic factors
- Food
- Predators
- New pathogens
What is a structural adaptation?
Features of an organisms body structure or appearance
Give an example of a structural adaptation
Horns or camouflage
What is a behavioural adaptation?
What an organism does
Give an example of a behavioural adaptation
Being nocturnal, huddling to keep warm
What is a functional adaptation?
The way things work inside an organism’s body
Give an example of a functional adaptation
Producing toxins
What is an extremophile?
An organism that lives in a very extreme environment
