B16 - Adaptions, Independence and Competition Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the three categories of adaptations that organisms go through to survive?
Structural
Behavioural
Functional
What are structural adaptations?
The physical features of an organism
What are behavioural adaptations?
The way an organism behaves or acts
What is an example of a structural adaptation in an organism?
Walruses store alot of fat and have a low surface area:volume ratio for cold conditions
What is are two examples of a behavioural adaptation in an organism?
An elephant spraying them selves with water when its hot
Birds migrating to warmer countries
What are functional adaptations?
The processes inside an organisms body. For example, their metabolism
What is an example of a functional adaptation in an organism?
Camels maintain water by producing very little sweat
They store fat in their humps to convert into water later
What are extremophiles?
Microorganisms like bacteria or archaea that are adapted to live in extreme environments
What are biotic factors?
Any living factors that affects another organism or has an impact on the ecostystem
What are abiotic factors?
All the non-living parts of the environment that can affect organisms
What are some examples of abiotic factors?
Temperature
Light intensity
Carbon dioxide concentration
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism lives
What is a population?
All the organisms of a particular species that life in a habitat
What is a community?
All the populations of different species that live in a habitat
What is the ecosystem?
The interaction of a community of living organisms with non living parts of their environment
What is interdependence?
Where all species depend on other species in some way
