B8 - transport in plants Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the two main transport systems in plants?
Xylem and phloem.
What is a vascular bundle?
A group of xylem and phloem tissues found in roots, stems, and leaves.
What does the xylem transport?
Water and mineral ions.
What does the phloem transport?
Sucrose and amino acids.
What is transpiration?
The loss of water vapour from leaves.
Where does water evaporate from in the leaf?
From a thin layer on the surfaces of the leaf mesophyll cells into the air spaces.
How does water leave the leaf?
By diffusing through the stomata.
What causes water to be pulled up through the plant?
Water evaporating from the leaves creates suction.
What is translocation?
The movement of sucrose and amino acids in phloem from sources to sinks.
What are sources in translocation?
Parts of the plant that release sucrose or amino acids.
What are sinks in translocation?
Parts of the plant that use or store sucrose or amino acids.
