BACTE_H.aegyptius Flashcards
(25 cards)
causative agent of acute and often purulent conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye.
Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius (Hae)
is otherwise known as Koch-Weeks Bacillus
Hemophilus aegyptius
discovered independently by ____________ in the 1883.
Koch and Weeks
also the causative agent of Brazilian Purpuric Fever.
Haemophilus aegyptius
acute septicemic fulminant illness affecting children
Brazilian purpuric fever
This disease usually occurs in hot climates characterized by concurrent conjunctivitis, high fever, vomiting, petechiae, purpura*, septicemia and shock with 70% mortality and death.

chocolate agar for h.aegyptius is supplemented with:
1% IsoVitaleX
Translucent, moist, flat, smooth and convex; produces a more grayish-appearing (grayish brown) colony” accompanied by “bleach-like” or “mousy” odor.
h. aegyptius
h. aegyptius’ Local eye instillation of antibody drops or ointment:
Sulfonamides, Polymixin B & Gentamicin.
Hemophilus aprophilus and Hemophilus paraprophylus have been combined into the same species and the name was changed into
Aggregatibacter aprophilus.
HACEK group
(Hemophilus sp., Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella corrodens and Kingella kingae)
resembles Hemophilus influenzae; a normal inhabitant of the human respiratory tract.
encountered occasionally in infective endocarditis and urethritis.
Hemophilus parainfluenzae
the most markedly hemolytic organism of the group in vitro; occurs both in the normal nasopharynx.
Hemophilus haemolyticus
requires X factor but not the V factor; found in dogs & not in humans
Hemophilus hemoglobinophilus
a highly communicable and important pathogen cause of respiratory illness in humans. Causes “Whooping Cough”
Bordetella pertussis
causes milder disease similar to Bordetella pertussis
Bordetella parapertussis
causes disease in animals such as Kennel cough in dogs and snuffles in rabbits.
occasionally causes respiratory disease and bacteremia in humans, primarily immunocompromised hosts.
Bordetella bronchiseptica
causes bacteremia, respiratory illness and arthritis.
Bordetella hinzii
causes turkey coryza; a rare cause of respiratory illness in humans
Bordetella avium
causes bacteremia among immunosuppressed patients
Bordetella holmesii
causes wound infections and otitis media.
Bordetella trematum
Smooth, convex colonies with pearl-like luster (resembling mercury droplets) on Bordet- Gengou Agar (BGA).
Bordetella pertussis
Colony is similar to Bordetella pertussis on BGA but produces a brown pigment on the medium: produces larger colonies.
Bordetella parapertussis
