Flashcards in Behav. Sci. CAM. Deck (19):
1

ancient helaing systems

long before conventional western medicine and include indian/chinese shit

2

hemeopathy

uses minute doses of a substance that cause symptoms to stimulate the body's self-healing response

3

naturopathy

focuses on noninvasive treatments to help your body do its own healing and uses a variety of practices, such as massage, acupuncture, herbal remedies, exercise, lifestyle counseling

4

mind-body medicine examples

meditation, prayer, relaxation and art therapies (meditation most effective)

5

biologically based practices

dietary supplements and herbal remedies

6

manipulative and body based practices - and examples

use human touch to move or manipulate a specific part of body. chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation and massage

7

energy medicine

some bullshit about an invisible energy flow through body and it being blocked/unbalanced causing you to become sick. chi, prana, life force

8

why little research on CAM?

usually paid for by big companies - fewer resources available to support trials of CAM therpies

9

CAM in psychiatry

diet (increased fruits, veggies), exercise (reset circadian clock, improve energy)

10

1 carbon cycle

for methylation, increases neurotransmitters, folate, B12, SAMe all implicated

11

mutation in MTHFR gene

cannot convert folate to l-methylfolate and cycle is defective - folate cannot cross the BBB

12

fatty acids and psych

found in fish oil/flax seed oil - antiinflammatory - maybe helpful in bipolar and major depressive disorders

13

st john's wort

many trials support - antidepressants

14

vit d

deficiency associated with depression - treatment not proven helpful unless low vit D

15

zinc, calcium, magnesium

little supportive data

16

breathing, yoga, mindfulness

limited evidence that it may lower PTSD and depressive symptoms - meditation part has reasonable data for anxiety control

17

acupuncture

in depression, open label trials show good effectiveness - too much variability for anxiety but maybe

18

light therapy for depression

best data*** for seasonal depression - 30 min daily 10000 lux bright broad spectrum light

19

final conclusion for CAM treatment in psychiatry

reasonable and some evidence - should be part of routine informed consent - data less stringent but approaches are often safer and less side effects (DO have some side effects though)
