Between Subjects Design Flashcards
(11 cards)
Between Subject Designs
a common type of experimental method that asks participants in a study to be part of either the treatment conditions or control conditions, but not both.
Advantages of BSD
no practice/testing-effects, no differential carry-over, less fatigue, can ask questions about individual differences.
Disadvantages of BSD
needs lots of resources (more participants), risk differences between participants in each group that are not related to your IV (adds noise).
Individual differences study - Quasi-experiment
examines the pre-existing differences between individuals. Selects a sample and divides it based on pre-existing differences. Example = are left handed people more creative?
Experimental research
only difference between the two conditions are their levels of the independent variable, attempts to eliminate or minimize pre-existing differences between groups.
Pre-test/Post-test
can test that groups were equivalent prior to manipulation. Can measure how IV changed performance within each level of IV.
Matched Pairs Designs
select a sample of PAIRS, and randomly divide into equal sized groups.
Ways to control eliminate confounding variables
the only difference between groups should be level of IV, avoid observing your group at different times of day, avoid different researchers being assigned to different conditions.
Experimenter bias
When experimenter is aware of the IV they behave differently, respond to subjects differently, and measure differently. Use a single or double-blind study
single-blind study
experimenter OR participant unaware
Double-blind study
experimenter and participant both unaware.
