bio2 blood Flashcards
(17 cards)
what do we call the process of making RBCS ?
hematopoiesis
where does the hematopoiesis takes place ?
red bone marrow
where can we find the red bone marrow ?
spine , ribs , pelvis and ends of long bones ( femur and humerus )
what does it mean if the reticulocyte levels are high ?
it may mean the body is producing too many rbcs ( due to blood loss ex)
what does it mean if the reticulocytes are too low ?
it may mean theres a problem with rbc production ( ex anemia or bone marrow issues )
who makes rbcs constantly ?
your bone marrow
wdym by hypoxia ?
when there are too few of rbcs ur tissues dont get enough oxygen
what do we mean by erythropoiesis ?
ur bone marrow produces 2 million rbcs per second
wt is a erythropoietin ?
a hormone that stimulates Rbc production
who produces EPO ?
the kidneys and liver
what triggers more EPO production ?
when ocygen levels drop , the kidneys detect HYPOXIA ( low oxygen )and they react by making more EPO
when does the kidney react to make more EPO ?
blood loss , iron deficiency and low oxygen levels
if the oxygen level is too high what happens ?
the body slows down EPO production
wt is a testosterone ?
male sex hormone
wt is the relationship bw testosterone and erythropoietin ?
tesetosterone helps the kidneys produce more erythropoietin
