Biochemical Signalling Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the steps of signalling?
Signal
Reception
Transduction
Response
Termination
What is the purpose of hormones?
Change cellular activity to coordinate metabolic activities.
Example of a top-down hormone?
adrenaline
Example of a bottom-up hormone?
Ghrelin (signals hunger)
What occurs during desensitization?
The receptor is moved from the cell surface or is blocked
How do GPCRs work?
A ligand binds to it, causing a change in shape of the GPCR which activates the connected G protein. This leads to a cascade of activations that amplify the signal.
In what order do PKA, GDP, cAMP, and adenylate cyclase “activate”?
GDP > adenylate cyclase > cAMP > PKA
How does the activation of cAMP activate PKA?
When inactive it physically blocks C subunit, but is moved when active allowing C substrate to be free.
What are two common types of GPCRs?
PLC and beta-adrenergic receptor
What type of receptor is insulin receptor?
tyrosine kinase, EGF
What do nuclear hormone receptors do?
Bind to DNA to regulate transcription of specific genes.
