Lipids & Membranes Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a fatty acid?
A carboxylic acid with a hydrocarbon tail (from 4-36 carbons long)
What are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids?
Fatty acids with a double bond between C3/C6 relative to the most distant carbon from the carboxylic acid
What is a triacylglycerol composed of?
Three fatty acids, and glycerol
How are fatty acids stored in the body?
What component?
Triacylglycerols
How are triacylglycerols stored in the body?
As lipid dropets in adipocytes
What are three types of membrane lipids?
- Phospholipids
- Glycolipids
- Sterols
What does this naming represent?
18:1 Δ9
A fatty acid with 18 carbons total and one double bond located at carbon 9
What is the difference between primary and secondary active transport?
Primary directly usesd ATP while secondary uses energy stored from an ion gradient
Different components of membrane?
4
Sterols, ion channels, glycolipids, integral proteins
