Fatty Acid Metabolism Flashcards
(9 cards)
Where does beta-oxidation occur?
In the mitochondrial matrix
What is a brief description of beta-oxidation?
Activation via CoA, then removal of 2-carbon units at a time to form acetyl-CoA.
Each cycle of beta oxidation produces:
1 NADH
1 FADH2
1 acetyl-CoA
Why does beta-oxidation produce more energy than glycolysis?
Fatty acids are much more reduced and produce much more acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2, leading to more ATP synthesized.
How many steps does beta oxidation consist of?
4
What does step 1 do?
Oxidation of the FA introduces a double bond. FAD is reduced.
What does step 2 do?
Hydration of the double bond.
What does step 3 do?
Oxidation to form a keto group. NAD+ is reduced.
What does step 4 do?
CoA attacks the keto group and acetyl-CoA falls off.
