Biodiversity Flashcards
(8 cards)
Humans and biodiversity
Economic gain means warning signs for lack of biodiversity are being ignored
Industrial revolution and beyond have left us able to fight against nature
Waste is effecting
Water - sewage and toxic chemicals find there way into water sources
Land - landfill sights, toxic herbicides and pesticides and buried nuclear waste all pollute land
Air - smoke and gasses are constantly being added to atmosphere, and contributing to global warming and rising co2 levels
Peat bogs
Here carbon remains in plants instead of being released into the atmosphere
Destruction of peat bogs results in burning or decay if peat which releases the carbon into the atmosphere as co2 a greenhouse gass
They are destroyed to make more farming space, to use peat as fuel, to sell the peat
Loss of biodiversity
Deforestation consequences
Burning of wood increases rate of co2 going into atmosphere
Less photosynthesis taking place means less co2 removed from atmosphere
Destruction of habitats
Chopped down to make room for farming, farming which incudes producing methane eg cows and rice fields
Co2
Co2 is removed from atmosphere by plants during photosynthesis
It’s also stored in water and peat bogs
It’s released naturally as a waste product of respiration
Now there’s artificial ways of releasing it to, unblancing the amount taken in and going out
Greenhouse effect
Greenhouse gases act as a natural insulating layer in the atmosphere re radiating most of the heat energy reflected off the earth back towards earth
Causes global warming
Consequences of global warming
Ice melting leads to rising sea levels and loss of biodiversity
Extreme events like droughts, storms, floods and wildfires happen more often
Sea surface temperatures rising hurting coral reefs and sealife
Ocean becoming more acidic making it harder to create coral reefs
Migration patterns altering
Distribution of species - species travelling away from the equator cause its to hot
Reduction in biodiversity
How to maintain biodiversity
Breeding programmes
Protecting endangered and rare species
Giving money to farmers to help
Government targets like reducing deforestation
Recycling
