Homeostasis Flashcards
(6 cards)
What does homeostasis describe
All processes that happen in a cell or organism to maintain optimal conditions
Why do we need homeostasis
We live in a changing environment therefore we need to regulate our bodys internal conditions to make sure our enzymes and cells function well
If conditions are not optimal then our enzymes can denatured ( change shape), reducing there ability to speed up metabolic reactions
Internal conditions humans need to regulate
Urea concentration ( in urine)
Internal body temp
Water levels
Blood sugar levels
Carbon dioxide levels
What are control systems made up of
Receptors - detect changes in environment
Coordination centres - receive and process info arriving from receptors
Effectors ( muscles or glands) - carry out responses to the stimuli to help restore optimum levels
What is negative feedback
A process where a change in a systems output triggers a response that reduces or reverses that change bringing the system back to optimum level
What is positive feedback
Opposite of negative feedback and makes small changes Bigger
