Plant Hormones Flashcards
(9 cards)
Auxins
Change growth patterns to allow roots and shoots to move towards or away from a stimulus
Respond to stimuli which involve directional growth called tropisms
Gibberellins
Start seed germination ( sprouting) process
Ethene
Gass that controls cell division and ripening if fruits
Tropisms
Controlled by auxins
There’s 2 types
Phototropisms:
Positive phototropisms - these responses involve growing directly towards a light source
Negative phototropisms - these responses involve growth away from a light source
Gravitropisms:
Positive gravitropisms - involve growth towards the direction of gravity
Negative gravitropisms - involve growth away from direction or gravity
Distribution of auxins and phototropisms
1 side of the shoot has more sunlight
Auxins redistribute within the shoot so the concentration of auxins is higher on the shaded side, resulting in more growth on the shaded side
Auxins in shoots vs roots
Shoots = auxins promote elongation of cells
Roots = auxins prevent elongation of cells
What are auxins used for
Weed killers
Rooting powders and to promote growth in tissue culture
What is ethane used for
Used in food industry to control ripening of fruit during storage and transport
What are gibberelins used for
Promoting flowering
Increasing fruit size
Starting germination
