Food Production Flashcards
(7 cards)
When will food security be achieved
When the whole global human population has access ro enough safe and nutritious food to stay healthy
Obsticals to food security
Increasing birth rates
New pests and pathogens reducing farming yield
Extreme events associated with climate change
Conflicts ( war) = reduced accessibility to resources
Cost of agricultural inputs like fertilisers means that farmers can afford less so yield suffers
Diet shifts - means food is transported across the world to meet commands
What is biotechnology
Use of biological processes to develop or make products. Modern techniques include:
Growing microorganisms for food
Genetically modified plants
What does a declining fishing stock mean
Fishermen struggle to make enough money
Food security threatened
Food chains effected
Populations of fish at risk of becoming extinct
What is sustainable fishing
Fish are not caught at a faster rate than they reproduce
Net size - controlling net hole sizes allows young smaller fish to slip through so they can survive to maturity
Fishing quotas - restricting number and size of fish that can legally be caught
Farming techniques to improve food production
Shortening food chains as only 10 percent of energy from each trophic layer passes to the next, so a shorter chain will allow more energy at the end
Energy will always be transfered from livestock to the environment due to essential processes like moving and maintaining body temp so by limiting the space they can move about and controlling the temperature of the area you can stop that
Feeding animals high protein foods helps boost there growth rates
BM1 =
Mass ÷ height²
