Biodiversity Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a quadrat and how do you use it
It is a square that is placed randomly within an environment and used to count the number of a certain type of organism in the quadrat
What is a transect
A number of quadrats placed at random intervals along a line
What is the capture/recapture technique
Organisms that are not stationary cannot be counted accurately in quadrats. Therefore when they are caught they are marked and then released. When a second sample is caught, it is easy to differentiate between the new organisms and the ones that have already be captured
What is biodiversity
The number of organisms in an area
Why is collecting data on biodiversity important
To monitor population numbers and endangered species
What is it called when an organism is used to control the population of another organism
Biological control
Name an organisation invested in maintaining biodiversity
RSPB
