Digestion Flashcards
(20 cards)
What does lipase do
Breaks down fats
What does carbohydrase do
Breaks down starch
What does protease do
Break down proteins
What is starch broken down into
Glucose
What are fats broken down into
Fatty acids and glycerol
What are proteins broken into
Amino acids
Why is protease released in the stomach
Because it’s optimum conditions are at pH 1 and 37.5 degrees Celsius
Why are large particles broken into smaller molecules during digestion
Large particles are insoluble and cannot be absorbed into the bloodstream
How do you test for starch
Add iodine solution and it will turn blue/black
How do you test for glucose
Add Benedict’s solution and heat in a water bath. It will turn green then yellow then brick red
How do you test for proteins
Add Biuret solution and it will turn lilac
Where is carbohydrase released
Small intestines and mouth
By what process is food moved down the oesophagus
Peristalsis
What happens during peristalsis
Pairs of muscles contract and push food down the oesophagus
Where is bile created and where is it stored
Created in the liver and stored in the gallbladder
What does bile do
It emulsifies fat droplets to break them down into smaller pieces
What do amino acids do for the body
Allow for the production of new proteins
What do broken down fats do for the body
Provide insulation and energy
What does glucose do for the body
Provided energy via respiration
What happens to molecules during digestion
They are broken down into smaller molecules
