Diffusion and Osmosis Flashcards
(6 cards)
What can the rate of diffusion be affected by?
Pressure
Temperature
Concentration
Define osmosis
The diffusion of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
What is active transport?
During active transport salts on ions are pumped from and area of low concentration to and area of high concentration. This process requires energy.
Define diffusion
A substance moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down a concentration gradient in a passive process that requires no energy until equilibrium is reached
Describe how visking tubing is a suitable model for a cell membrane
Visking tubing allows substance to pass through as it is semi-permeable and allows molecules that are small enough to pass through. The cell membrane also allows substances to pass through as needed
Give an example of when diffusion occurs in the body
Gas exchange
