Respiratory System Flashcards
(12 cards)
What occurs during inspiration
The volume in the thorax expands, the diaphragm flattens, the rib cage is pushed up and out and the pressure decreases
By what process is air moved from the alveoli to the bloodstream and vise versa
diffusion
What occurs during expiration
The volume in the thorax decreases, the diaphragm bends upwards, the pressure increases and the rib cage moves in and down
Name the tissues air passes through from the nose to the capillary
Nasal cavity Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli Capillary
What gas does expired air contain more of
Carbon dioxide
Name two lung conditions commonly caused by smoking
Lung cancer
Emphysema
What are the cilia and what is their purpose
They are small hairs in the trachea that waft dust and microorganism caught in the mucus back up the trachea
What is mucus and what does it do
Mucus is sticky and traps dust and microbes
How does smoking affect the cilia and mucus
Cigarette smoke damages the cilia and causes a build up of mucus
Why affect does cigarette smoke have on the alveoli
The alveoli walls break down creating larger air spaces and less effective gas exchange
How are alveoli adapted for their purpose
They are wrapped in capillaries for gas exchange and are moist for easier gas exchange
Other diffusion name another process for the movement of air molecules in gas exchange
Active transport
