Biological Approach Flashcards
(6 cards)
Assumptions
All behaviour can be explained through genes, hormones, neurotransmitters, nervous system, brain structure + evolution
Neurochemical basis
Neurochemistry can explain behaviour
Neurotransmitters transmit messages through neurons
e.g low serotonin = depression
high dopamine = OCD
Genetics
Monozygotic - share 100% genes
Dizygotic - share 50% genes
Twin studies used to determine likelihood of traits having a genetic basis
Concordance rate = extent twins share same characteristics
Genotype + phenotype
Genotype - personas actual genetic makeup
influenced by environment
e.g identical twins look different - exercise/ dying hair
Phenotype - the way genes are expressed through: physical, behavioural and psychological characteristics
Evolution + behaviour
Darwin - natural selection
Genetics that enhance survival = passed onto future generation
e.g attachment = adapted (increase survival)
AO3
Treatment - drugs
Improve quality of life
Reductionaist
Can identify genetics for criminal behaviour
Genetic screening
