Hemispheric lateralisation Flashcards
(6 cards)
Hemispheric lateralisation
Ability to produce and understand language is controlled by left hemisphere
left visual field - right hemisphere
right visual field - left hemisphere
Link between hemispheres
Corpus callosum - bundle of nerve fibers that connect two halves
Split-brain studies
Corpus collosum cut to control their epilepsy
No way hemispheres could communicate
Sperry’s split brain study
Image or word projected to right visual field or left visual field
Patient asked to make response with left hand or right hand or verbally ( left hemisphere)
Findings
Right visual field (flashed image) could answer because left hemisphere processes language + RVF
Left visual field - cant say anything
Processes image by right hemisphere but NO language centre
Touch:
LVF - cannot verbally describe, selecting matching with left hand
AO3
Supporting evidence for lateralisation
Different roles
Low reliability
Small sample - 11 patients
All have epilepsy
Controlled procedure
Image flashed for 0.1 seconds
No time to move eyes
