Free will
Emphasise that people have full conscious control over their destiny - free will
Believe that humans are able to make significant personal choices within the constraints of society + biological factors
Maslows theory
People have certain needs to allow people to grow
Maslow hierarchy
Each level fulfilled to move up
Maslows heirarchy
Seld-actualisation : Achieve one’s full potential - creative activities
Esteem needs : Prestige + feeling of accomplishment
Belongingness + love needs: Intimate relationships, friends
Safety needs: Security, safety
Physiological needs: food, water, rest
Self actualisation
All four levels must be accomplishedals
Individuals must leave fears, doubts and inhibitions to achieve their dreams + goals
The self, congruence and conditions of worth
Personal growth achieved by actual self (how they are seen) and ideal self (how they want to be seen) the same
(CONGRUENCE)
If gap too big = INCONGRUENCE
Self-actualisation not possible
Conditions of worth
Many issues experience as adult (worthlessness + low self esteem) due to childhood
Issues due to lack of UNCONDITIONPOSITIVE REGARD from parents
Setting boundaries + limits for love of their child = storing psychological problems for child
Therapy = provide unconditional positive regard
Influence on counselling psychology
Psychological problems direct result of conditions of worth + conditional positive regard they received
Counselling = solve problems in constructive way
Unconditional positive regard = become more true to self, behave as person they are not what people want them to

Sees good in everyone, free to work to achieve full potential
