Biology - key concepts Flashcards
(8 cards)
what is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a biological catalyst. It speeds up reactions in your body and helps break down certain substrates, such as lipase (which breaks down fat), amylase (carbohydrates, starch), and protease (proteins).
where are enzymes created?
the pancreas
what do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
any of: chloroplast, cell wall, and vacuole
which two places will you find ciliated epithelial cells?
The oviducts and lungs
what enzyme breaks down lactose?
lactase breaks lactose down into glactose and glucose
what enzyme breaks down proteins?
protease breaks proteins down into amino acids
what does amylase break starch down into?
maltose then glucose
what enzyme breaks down fats
lipase breaks fats down into fatty acids and glycerol
