chemistry - metals Flashcards
(11 cards)
What element is at the top of the reactivity series? And what is its symbol?
Potassium (K)
What element is at the bottom of the reactivity series? And what is its symbol?
Gold (Au)
Which 2 non-metals are in the reactivity series?
Carbon and Hydrogen
What is a commonly used method for extracting metals above carbon in the reactivity series involving molten cryolite?
Electrolysis
What is a commonly used method of extraction of metals between hydrogen and carbon in the reactivity series?
Combustion with carbon
When a metal is extracted via combustion with carbon, what reaction takes place?
A displacement reaction takes place
What is the definition of an alloy?
An alloy is a mixture of a metal with another element, usually another metal.
Which commonly used alloy is made from iron and carbon?
Steel
What makes an alloy stronger than a pure metal?
A pure metal is made from atoms in a neat, uniform formation, which makes them easier to slide off of each other. However, an alloy is made of two elements, usually different sizes so their formation is less neat and uniform, making them harder to slide off of each other.
What are the negative effects of
obtaining metals through mining and
extracting ores?
1: Mines produce noise and dust pollution.
Sometimes they are sited in areas such as
rainforests, so habitats are destroyed.
2: Lots of energy is required to extract ores.
What is an oxidation reaction?
It is when oxygen is removed from the element being reacted in a reaction
