Q

what is the perpheral nervous system (PNS)

A

transmits information to the CNS from the environment ans sends messages from CNS to muscles and glands

Q

what is the somatic nervous system(SNS)

A

sends information from the sense organs to the CNS. It also process information from the CNS that controls muscle action.

6
Q

what is the autonomic nervous system

A

automatically send information to and from bodily organs. It has divisions - sympathetic and parasymphatetic

8
Q

what is the brain’s role

A

center of all conscious awareness. Can be divided into 4 areas- celebral cortex, cerebellum, diencephalon and the brain stem. Brain divided into 2 hemisphere (left and right) which communicate with eachother via a bridge the corpus callosum

Q

what is the role of the spinal cord

A

a long bundle of nerve cells that carry messages from and to the brain to body. Spinal nerves-part of the PNS- connect with specific muscles and glands. Very fast reflexes

11
Q

what does the PNS refer to

A

any nerves and nerve cells which are not classed as part of the brain or the spinal cord. They send information via millions of neurones to the CNS from enviro and relay messages from the CNS.

13
Q

what are the 2 functions of the somatic nervous system

reciveing information from our senses and passing it to the CNS,
Controlling voluntary muscle movement

A

relay/send messages to the CNS from our sense organs

16
Q

what are the motor neurones

A

relay info from the CNS to other areas of the body

17
Q

what does the ANS do

A

responsible for involuntary (reflex/automatic) movements. communicates info to the CNS from our organs and to our organs the CNS

18
Q

ANS split into 2 divisions what are they

A

symphatetic and parasymphatetic

19
Q

what is the role of sympaphetic

A

helps us deal with emergencies- flight or fight- also slows down bodily processes that are less important in emergency such as digestion

20
Q

parasympaphetic role

A

restores the body back to normal functioning after the emergency has passed. slows down heart rate and bloood pressure down. digestion beings again sometimes known as ‘rest and digest system’

21
Q

what is a neurone

A

a nerve cell that receives and processes electrical or chemical impulses

22
Q

what is a sensory neurone

A

has long dendrites- short axons- transmits signals from the receptors to CNS

23
Q

what is the motor neurone

A

has short dendrites- long axons- Send messages from CNS to rest of the body

24
Q

what is the relay neurone

A

short axons and dendrites- connect motor and sensory and other relay neurones

25
what is the cell body
contains the nucleus and genetic material of the cell
26
what are the dendrites
branch out from cell body receive signals from neighbouring cell and carry impulses towards the cell body
27
what are axons
thin body that carries impulses away from the cell body
28
what is the mylein sheath
fatty substances- insulating material that protects the axon and speeds up chemical transmission of the impulse
29
what is the nodes of ranvier
the mylein sheath is segmented by gaps called the nodes of ranvier that speed up chemical transmission of the impulse by forcing it to jump across the gaps along the axon
30
what are the terminal buttons
located at the end of the axon and communicate with the next nerve cell across the synapse.
