social influence Flashcards
(11 cards)
what are the 3 types of conformity
compliance, identification, internalisation
what is conformity
when we change our behaviours and attitudes as a result from a person or group.
what is compliance
when we outwardly go along with the majority but privately disagree with it. Behaviour only changes when with group
what is identification
we conform to opinions because there is something about the group that we value. We don’t privately agree with everything the group stands for.
what is internalisation
we take on the majority view and accept it as correct we privately and publically change our opinions even when group is absent.
what are explanations for conformity-AO1
Deutsch and Gerald 1955- 2 process theory- people conform because of 2 central human needs- need to be right and need to be liked
What is informational social informative
This is the need to be right. WE look to those who we think are correct in ambigious situations which acts how we behave. We conform from group to group because of situational ambiguity. This leads to internalisation
what is normative social influence
the need to be liked. This is when we want to fit in with people and trends. This leads to temporary change. Leads to compliance.
who is asch and what is his study
He investigated variables against conformity. His study in 1955- ‘Opinions and Social Pressure.
what was the aim of Asch study
He wanted to test conformity under non amigious conditions. He devised a simple perception test of matching lines 1 of 3 other in comparison.
What was the procedure of Asch study
123 male american students told it was a study into perception when it was a test to see if they conformed in a situation with a clear answer. Only 1 real participant with 7 confederates pretending to be real. All gave same wrong answer 12/18 trials. Conducted in a laboratory. All sat in a horseshoe shoe shape. P was 2 to last to give answer therefore faced with either giving their own opinion or conform to group.
