Botany Flashcards
(21 cards)
Study of the physical form and external stimuli of a plant.
PHYTOMORPHOLOGY
Absorbs water and inorganic nutrients, anchors the plant to the ground.
ROOTS
It consists of one prominent main root with smaller lateral roots branching from it.
TAPROOT SYSTEM
It consists of several adventitious roots of approximately equal size that arise from the base of the stem.
FIBROUS ROOTS
It support leaves a reproductive structures, provide internal transport, and produce new living tissues.
STEMS
It consists of soft, nonwoody tissues.
HERBACEOUS
It is with extensive hard tissues of wood and bark.
WOODY
It priarily functions for photosynthesis.
LEAVES
It is a waxy covering over the epidermis pf the aerial parts of the plant.
CUTICLE
It serves as a way for gas exchange.
STOMA
It is found in the epidermis of a stem or leaf, two guard cells form a pore.
GUARD CELLS
It protects the tree from cold, heat, and insects and animal, keeps moisture out in the rain, prevents the tree from losing moisture when the air is dry.
OUTER BARK
It serves as a passageway of food.
PHLOEM
It is the growing part of the trunk.
CAMBIUM
It serves as the passageway of water moving up to the leaves.
XYLEM
It is the central, supporting pillar of the tree.
HEARTWOOD
It is responsible for the growth of the plant body.
MERISTEMATIC TISSUE / MERISTEM
It perform specific functions such as protection, support, storage and conduction.
PERMANENT TISSUES / MATURE TISSUES
It is the main tissue in the plant body.
PARENCHYMA
It provides mechanical support to the shoot of a plant.
COLLENCHYMA
It provides mechanical support and protection to different parts of the plant body.
SCLERENCHYMA
