Taxonomy, Systematics & Evolution Flashcards
(14 cards)
Disuse would cause a trait to become reduced while use will result to a trait being refined and traits changed acquired over an individual’s lifetime could be passed down to its offspring.
LAMARCK: THE THEORY OF TRANSFORMATION AND INHERITANCE
The ability of species to chance over time
EVOLUTION
The diversity of life on earth emerged out of the evolution from one or a fer common ancestors.
COMMON DESCENT
The evolution was a much slower process, taking place in innumerable small steps.
GRADUALISM
It states that within a population, change in a species occurs as the balance of hereditary characteristics shifts across that population.
POPULATION SPECIATION
It is a competition, also called the struggle for life, had been thought of as a reason that a given species might succeed or go extinct.
NATURAL SELECTION
Species that are not closely related to each other independently evolve similar kinds of traits.
Ex: wings of butterfly and bee
CONVERGENT EVOLUTION
A trait held by a common ancestors evolves into different variations over time.
DIVERGENT EVOLUTION
It occurs when a population becomes separated into two entirely isolated subpopulations.
ALLOPATRIC SPECIATION
It occurs when a very small subpopulation becomes isolated from a much larger majority.
PERIPATRIC SPECIATION
It occurs when a small subpopulation remains within the habitat of an original population but enters a different niche.
PARAPATRIC SPECIATION
It occurs with no form of isolation between two populations.
SYMPATRIC SPECIATION
It occurs when different species strt with similar ancestral origins, then evolve similar traits over time.
PARALLEL EVOLUTION
It occurs when closely interacting species exert selective pressures on each other, so that they evolve together in a kind of conversation of adaptations.
COEVOLUTION
