Bowlby's monotropic theory of attachment Flashcards
(6 cards)
Are Bowlby’s monotropic theory of attachment in order?
Adaptive, social releasers, critical period, monotropy, internal working model.
What does adaptive refer to?
Forming at attachment that helps to ensure the survival of a child. This is because if an infant has an attachment to a caregiver, they are kept save given food and kept warm.
What do social releasers refer to?
Innate infant behaviours and characteristics which encourage an innate nurturing response from an adult. This cam be physical such as ‘baby face’ features such as big eyes or button nose, crying etc.
What does the critical period refer to?
The time period you must form an attachment . This is between birth and 2 1/2 years old. If it doesn’t happen there are long term, negative irreversible consequences.
What does Monotropy refer to?
Infant form one very special, intense attachment with their mother. If the mother isn’t available, the infant should bond with another ever present adult mother-substitute.
What does the internal working model refer to?
mental template for all relationships. Based of your first monotropy with PCG . For example a good/ positive attachment+ good future relationships and a bad first attachment+ bad future relationships.
