What type of experiment was the stranger situation?
Observation in a controlled environment.
How many series of episodes as there and what are some examples of them?
3 minute episodes
Mother and baby, stranger enter; mother leaves; mother returns etc.
How did Ainsworth observe?
Through a one-way mirror so that the children did not know that they were being observed.
How many children were observed and where were they from?
100 middle class Americans.
What is separation anxiety?
This refers to when a child expresses distress when separated from their caregiver i.e. protesting to them leaving.
What is stranger anxiety?
Expressing distress when in the presence of unfamiliar adults.
What is reunion behaviour?
How the child reacts when united with the caregiver after a period of separation
What is willingness to explore?
Whether a child feels free to explore by using their caregiver as a secure base i.e. a point of contact that will make them feel self.
Describe an insecure avoidant baby?
Separation anxiety = Low
Stranger anxiety = Low
Reunion behaviour = Unjoyful
Willingness to explore = they are willing

Separation anxiety = Moderate
Stranger anxiety = Moderate

Why do insecure avoidant babies act the way they do?
The mother ignores the emotional needs of the infant.
Why do secure babies act the way they do?
The mother meets the emotional needs of the infant.
Why do insecure resistant babies act the way they do?
The mother sometimes meets the needs of the infant and sometimes ignores their emotional needs.
