What is the procedure for Shaffer’s Glasgow baby study 1964?
Observational study of the information of early-infant adult attachments. 60 babies from work-class Glaswegian families. Researchers visited babies and mothers in their own homes once a month for the first year. Then they visited a final time when the babies were 18 months old.
What does separation anxiety refer to?
becoming upset ( crying) when the caregiver leaves.
How is separation anxiety measured?
By getting the mother to leave to observe the babies behaviour (cry or not bothered)
What does stranger anxiety refer to?
Becoming upset in the presence of a stranger.
How is stranger anxiety measured?
By having a stranger interact with the baby and observe the babies reaction.
What are the 4 distinct stages in the development of infant attachment in order?
Asocial, indiscriminate stage, specific attachment, multiple attachments.
What is the age and description of the Asocial stage?
Age: First few weeks
Description: Behaviour between humans and non-human objects are quite similar. The baby is happier in the presence of humans than when alone and they prefer faces to non-faces and smile at anyone.
What is the age and description of the Indiscriminate stage?
Age: 2-7 months
Description: Recognise and prefer familiar faces and smile more at them than unfamiliar faces but they will still accept comfort from any adult.
What is the age and description of the Specific attachment?
Age: From around 7 months
Description:
Primary attachment to one particular individual
(the person who shows most sensitivity to their signals). The baby also shows stranger anxiety and separation anxiety( first stage of attachment)
What is the age and description of the Multiple attachments?
Age: By 1 years old
Description: From secondary attachment with familiar adults with whom they spend time (e.g. father, grandparents).
