Brain Flashcards
(24 cards)
meninges
coverings of the brain that lie immediately internal to cranium
dura mater
made up of periosteal layer and meningeal layer
arachnoid mater
covers blood vessels on external surface of brain and resembles spider webs.
subdural space
between arachnoid matter and dura matter
pia matter
continuous with the bumps and grooves of brain
function of meninges
protection, forms a supporting framework for arteries, veins, and venous sinuses, enclosed fluid filled cavity
what makes up the brainstem?
medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain
Medulla oblongata function
conduction pathway for ascending and descending nerve fibers. control center for vital organs (respiration rate, heart rate, vasodilation and constriction), cranial nerves 9-12 are located here
Pons
relay center for nerve fibers going from cerebrum and cerebellum.
Plays a role in sleep and respiration
cranial nerve 5 passes through and cranial 6-8 are at the junction of medulla oblongata and pons
midbrain
nuclei of cranial nerves 3 and 4
what are the four mounds of the midbrain
2 superior colliculi
2 inferior colliculi
what two cranial nerves do not enter or exit via brainstem?
cranial nerve I and II
Reticular formation
clusters of nuclei scattered throughout stem. play a role in arousing and maintaining consciousness
diencephalon
makes up all of the thalamuses
what happens in the diencephalon
influences mood and body motions associated with strong emotions, all sensation except olfaction passes through thalamus to get to cerebrum
subthalamus
smallest region of thalamus, nuclei have motor functions
epithalamus
involved in sleep/wake cycle and the onset of puberty.
involved in visceral olfaction
affects moods
hypothalamus
involved in olfactory reflection, emotional responses to odor.
Center for basic drives.
Temperature regulation
sleep and dream center
Cerebrum
critical thinking
frontal lobe
motivation, mood, aggression
Temporal
hearing and memory
parietal lobe
sensory information except for hearing, smelling, and vision
occipital
visual input and interpretation
cerebellum
muscular activity coordination center
